Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Mulholland, known for having one of the best pickoff moves in the Majors, had an interesting, as well as a long, big-league career. A play he made with the Giants has been shown countless times on TV because he fielded a hard ground ball, and when the ball got stuck in the web of his glove, he tossed the glove to the first baseman to retire the runner. His no-hitter was against the Giants in 1990, and he faced the minimum of twenty-seven hitters. The only man to reach base did so on an error and then was retired on a double play. He is one of the few pitchers to beat ever Major League team at least once. Among other things, he was noted for durability and versatility. With the Cubs in 1998, he sometimes would pitch in relief one day and as a started the next. In 2004, when he was forty-one years old, his catcher was Pat Borders , also forty-one, making them the oldest battery in big-league history at the time." - Author Gary Caruso in Marietta College Baseball: The Story of the 'Etta Express (The History Press, 03/11/2012, Page 187)

Did you know that only eighteen pitchers in Major League Baseball history have earned a win against all thirty Major League teams? Sportswriter AJ Cassavell once wrote, " Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history ." We agree and are pleased to present the I've Beaten Every Major League Team "club" that includes these 18 twirlers: Kevin Brown , A.J. Burnett , Bartolo Colon , Dan Haren , Tim Hudson , Randy Johnson , John Lackey , Al Leiter (who started the "club"), Kyle Lohse , Derek Lowe , Jamie Moyer , Terry Mulholland , Vicente Padilla , Max Scherzer , Curt Schilling , Javier Vazquez , Woody Williams and Barry Zito .

Did you know that Terry Mulholland was traded on July 31, 1996; July 31, 1999; and July 31, 2001, the first ballplayers to be traded three times, on that exact date, since the nonwaiver trade deadline was set to July 31st (in 1986)?

On July 8, 1898, Red Donahue threw a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies during a home game. Ninety-two years later, Terry Mulholland threw the next Phillies no-hitter during a home game, the first in Veteran's Stadium:

Terry Mulholland No Hitter, August 15, 1990 .

Terry Mulholland had begun the 1990 season in the Phillies bullpen before becoming the club's fifth starter. After going on the disabled list in June and spending time at Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre on a rehabilitation assignment, he took a 6-6 record into the Wednesday August 15 game against his old teammates, holders of third place in the National League West. He and the fifth place Phillies were opposed on the mound by Don Robinson .

Throughout the game, with 32,156 in attendance, the 27-year-old Mulholland had excellent control. Relying mostly on off-speed pitches in the early innings and a hard slider late in the game, he walked no one.

For the first six innings, no Giant reached base. Mulholland easily retired the side each inning while allowing only a few hard hit balls.

Center fielder Lenny Dykstra made three outstanding catches, one on Greg Litton's hard line drive in the second inning. Dykstra also made a good grab of Robinson's smash to right center in the third. Finally, he raced in to make a sparkling catch on Litton's sinking liner in the eighth.

The Giants , one of the hardest-hitting teams in the National League with a lineup featuring Will Clark , Kevin Mitchell and Matt Williams , struck out eight times. In the fifth inning, Mitchell worked Mulholland to a full count, then fouled off several pitches before finally striking out in what was one of the toughest at-bats for the Giants .

Mulholland's perfect game ended in the seventh when ex- Phillies farmhand Rich Parker , ironically one of the players swapped to the Giants for the Phillies ' southpaw, hit a hard grounder to third. Charlie Hayes , who also came to the Phillies in that trade, fielded it cleanly, but his throw pulled first baseman John Kruk off the bag, allowing Parker to become the only Giants batter in the game to reach base safely. Hayes was charged with an error. Parker , however, was immediately erased from the base paths when Dave Anderson hit a double play bouncer to shortstop Dickie Thon .

Hayes redeemed himself in the ninth inning when he made a sensational, leaping, back-handed catch of pinch-hitter Gary Carter's wicked line drive down the third base line. The catch, coming after pinch-hitter Bill Bathe had grounded out to Hayes and Jose Uribe , had bounced out to Thon , ended the game.

While Mulholland was hurling his masterpiece, the fifth place Phillies ' offense made good use of its eight hits. The Phils scored once in the first on John Kruk's RBI single. In the fifth, Dykstra doubled home one run, and Darren Daulton followed with a two-run homer. Run scoring singles by Hayes and Mulholland added two more runs in the sixth.

Mulholland went on to a 9-10 record in 1990, then won 41 and lost 33 with the Phillies over the next three seasons.
