Mike Mussina Stats

Mike Mussina was born on Sunday, December 8, 1968, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Mussina was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 4, 1991, with the Baltimore Orioles. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Mike Mussina baseball stats page.

"Mike Mussina is worthy of enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. While he might not possess the eye popping statistics of a Greg Maddux or have won 305 games like Tom Glavine , Mussina's overall body of work clearly states that he was an elite starting pitcher in an era tainted by performance enhancing substances. His accomplishments had occurred in one of the toughest divisions in baseball over the past 20 years and he was the personification of a cerebral pitcher that constantly dissected the inefficiencies of his opponents. Good things come to those who wait and Mussina will someday bask in the glory that comes with being a Hall of Famer." - Staff Writer Wayne G. McDonnell, Jr. in Forbes (01/08/2014, 'Mike Mussina's Hall Of Fame Candidacy Will Require Patience And Further Examination', Source )

Did you know that Mike Mussina was the first (and only) New York Yankees pitcher to have a 20-win season the last year he played in the big leagues? The last pitcher before Moose to win 20+ games in a single season then retire was Sandy Koufax , who went 27-9 in 1966, for the Brooklyn Dodgers . The last American League pitcher, before Moose, was Lefty Williams , who went 22-14 in 1920, for the Chicago White Sox .

Mike Mussina won ten-or-more games in seventeen seasons, all consecutively, from 1992 through 2008. The only pitchers in baseball history with more 10+ win seasons in a career are Steve Carlton , Tom Glavine and Walter Johnson , each with eighteen. Roger Clemens , who is alone with nineteen. Greg Maddux and Nolan Ryan , tied at twenty. And Don Sutton , alone at the top with twenty-one ten-win seasons in his career.

Mike Mussina pitched fifty-seven complete games including nine five-hitters, five four-hitters, nine three-hitters, six two-hitters, and four one-hitters ( July 17, 1992 , May 30, 1997 , August 1, 2000 , September 2, 2001 ).

Mike Mussina has 117 more wins than losses. Every pitcher with that same statistical feat has been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2014, Moose appeared on his first ballot and received 116 votes, 20.3%, putting him fifteenth overall. Share your opinion with us on Baseball Fever , does Mussina belong in the Hall of Fame?

Mike Mussina was ranked thirty-fifth by a Bleacher Report article on The 100 Most Dominant Pitchers in MLB History , "Mike 'Moose' Mussina was about as consistent and dangerous a pitcher as one could hope for. He won 17-to-18 games per season while making a strong case for an All-Star bid. Year in and out he was in the Cy Young conversation, though never officially won one. On top of that, he is a seven-time Gold Glove winner."

The only American League (AL) pitcher with more Gold Gloves than Moose (who had seven) is Jim Kaat , who had fourteen in the AL and two additional in the National League. Four of the seven Moose won were with the Baltimore Orioles , tying him for the team record with Jim Palmer (1976-1979).
