What did Nuxhall think of the Major Leagues after his career? In Baseball Digest, 'What Some Old-Timers Think of the Major Leagues Today' (November 1995, Rick Van Blair, Page 53) he said, "As far as the game today compared to the game of the '40s and '50s - in my day you really had to earn your keep, so to speak. There were no long-term contacts, so if you had a bad year you had to pay for it the next year contract time. If you had a good year, you still had to fight for a raise. Because of that I wish I was playing today."

On June 10, 1944 , a 15-year-old Joe Nuxhall took the mound, pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief, and became the youngest pitcher in Major League history . At 15 years, 10 months, 11 days, he also set - and still holds - the record for youngest player ever to appear in a game at any position . Below is the play by play for his 2/3 of work during his debut which Nuxhall later said, "I was pitching against seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders, kids 13 and 14 years old... All of a sudden, I look up and there's Stan Musial and the likes. It was a very scary situation:"

9th Inning Play By Play

Joe Nuxhall replaced Buck Fausett pitching.

George Fallon grounded out (shortstop to first). OUT #1.

Mort Cooper walked.

Augie Bergamo hit a liner directly to the shortstop. OUT #2.

Nuxhall threw a wild pitch [ Mort Cooper to second].

Debs Garms walked.

Stan Musial singled to right [ Debs Garms to second, Mort Cooper to third].

Ray Sanders walked [ Mort Cooper scored, Debs Garms to third, Stan Musial to second].

Walker Cooper walked [ Debs Garms scored, Stan Musial to third, Ray Sanders to second].

Danny Litwhiler walked [ Stan Musial scored, Ray Sanders to third, Walker Cooper to second].

Emil Verban singled to left [ Danny Litwhiler to second, Walker Cooper scored, Ray Sanders scored].

Jake Eisenhart REPLACED Joe Nuxhall pitching.

George Fallon walked [ Danny Litwhiler to third, Emil Verban to second].

Mort Cooper popped to first in foul territory. OUT #3.

Did you know that when Eppa Rixey retired in 1933, he had pitched a Cincinnati Reds team record 440 games, the most by a lefty in team history? Did you know that Joe Nuxhall broke that record, went on to appear in 484 games for the Reds , and still holds the franchise record for most games pitched in Cincinnati by a lefty?
