Lefty O'Doul is truly instrumental in spreading baseball's popularity in Japan, serving as the sport's goodwill ambassador before and after World War II. The one time starting pitcher, who went on to win two batting titles (1929 & 1932) as an outfielder , traveled on a regular basis to Japan and is a vital figure in the establishment of professional baseball in Japan. So vital, in fact, that in 2002, O'Doul became the first former Major League ballplayer enshrined in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.

Did you know that Lefty O'Doul, who had 254 hits with Philadelphia in 1929 , broke the Phillies record for hits in a season set by hall of famer Ed Delahanty , who had 238 hits in 1899 ? Too easy? Did you know that 254-hit season was also a National League all-time record which, to this day, has yet to be broken? [ Hits Records / MLB.com ]

Who was the first player Ted Williams asked for advice? Lefty O'Doul! "As a teenager growing up in San Diego, Ted Williams never forgot the first time he laid eyes on O'Doul. 'I saw him come to bat in batting practice,' Williams said. 'I was looking through a knothole, and I said, 'Geez, does that guy look good.' It was my first look at an all-time great. A kid copies what he sees. ... If he never sees it, he'll never know. He was the first guy I ever asked for advice.'" [Source: MLB.com, Dan Holmes, February 26, 2007, Full Story .]
