Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I was getting tired by the eighteenth inning, but the players kept telling me: 'Just one inning, Joe, and we'll get a run.' ( George ) Stallings never did ask me if I wanted to come out. But the batters were griping to stop the game. I didn't want to stop . It was getting dark and there were no lights in those days. ( Barry ) McCormick , the umpire, after talking to the two managers, finally called the game after 26 innings." - Joe Oeschger in Baseball Research Journal (Lynwood Carranco, Joe Oeschger Remembers , 1980)

Joseph Carl Oeschger was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies (1914-1919, 1924), New York Giants (1919, 1924), Boston Braves (1919-1923), and Brooklyn Robins (1925). When Joe took the field on April 21, 1914, he became the first Ferndale High School graduate to reach the majors!

Joe Oeschger set the Major League record for most innings pitched in a single game on May 1, 1920 . Believe it or not, Oeschger's record setting twenty-six innings pitched has been tied once, by one pitcher—his opposing pitcher in the same exact game, Leon Cadore .

Joe Oeschger / Leon Cadore, Innings Pitched Record Setting Game

Joe Oeschger & Leon Cadore Set Innings Pitched Record | The Brooklyn Daily Eagle | May 2, 1920

Did you know that Joe Oeschger, on September 8, 1921 , threw exactly three pitches to Bevo LeBourveau , in the fourth inning, all three were strikes, then threw exactly three pitches to Cy Williams , all three were strikes, then rounded off the inning by throwing exactly three pitches to Ed Konetchy , all three of which were strikes as well - the first recorded immaculate inning by a Braves pitcher?

On April 30, 1919 , Joe Oeschger went all-the way in a twenty-inning tie, versus Burleigh Grimes , who also was the only pitcher used that day. Oeschger's inning pitched record (26 / details above) will never be broken, and this second -twenty inning contest give Oeschger two career 20-inning complete games—a feat never matched before or after him—this too, will never be duplicated.
