Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"One of the main things is just being consistent with my mechanics and throwing a lot of strikes, getting ahead in the count. I can't really preach anything more than I can about getting ahead in the count. When you get ahead, you make guys swing at your pitch instead of them being able to wait for their pitch. If you get behind in the count, then bad things happen. So for me a big key has been staying aggressive and I've been blessed with some good teams, which obviously helps. Good defense -- you get that winning attitude and it's a lot of fun to play." - Darren Oliver on MLB.com (Gregor Chisholm, 03/01/2012, 'Oliver's second act continues north of border', Source )

Interleague play was first introduced in 1997, and refers to a regular season baseball game played between an American League team and a National League team, an event that only occurred previously during Spring Training, Exhibition Games, and the World Series. On June 12, 1997 , the first four interleague games were scheduled, three west coast games, and a Texas Rangers vs San Francisco Giants game in The Ballpark at Arlington. In that historic game, the first interleague game ever played , Darren Oliver was the starting pitcher (1st pitch / 1st loss / and more).

Nolan Ryan played for several teams and had several teammates, including Bob Oliver from 1972-74, and Darren in 1993, significant because Bob is Darren's father! Nolan and Darren have another unique baseball connection, they are the only two pitchers to play for all four original expansion teams ( Angels , Astros , Mets and Rangers ).

In 1994, Darren Oliver had his first career save ( June 8 ), and his second career save ( July 25 ). In 2010, Darren Oliver recorded his third career save ( April 22 ), fifteen years and two-hundred seventy one days later - an all-time "record" for most time between two career saves. Do you know whose record he broke? [ Answer ]
