"A few people have ribbed me about that. They'll say, 'Hey Jesse, 70 games pitched and 30 innings.' They think it's an easy life, but I have to be in good shape, just as if I were pitching two or three innings at a time. You'll get into a lot of games in this role." - Jesse Orosco in Baseball Digest (August 1998, Lefty Relief Specialists in Demand , Page 15)

Jesse Orosco Rookie Card | 1980 Topps Baseball Card (#681 | Checklist )
Baseball Almanac Collection

Did you know that Jesse Orosco won two games in the same day on July 31, 1983? [Game 1| Game 2] When he did, he became the first Mets pitcher to win two games on the same date, joining Craig Anderson (1962) and Willard Hunter (1964)!

Did you know that Jesse Orosco holds the Major League record for games pitched during a career ? His 1,252 appearances put him solidly at #1 in the Top 1,000 Games Pitched leaderboard and he is one of only sixteen pitchers in big league history with more than a thousand trips to the mound!

Did you know that Jesse Orosco appeared in relief in 1,248 of those 1,252 games pitched, setting the major league record for most career games pitched in relief ? Too easy? From that set of 1,248 games, he appeared as a relief pitcher in 1,199 consecutive games (no starts in between), setting another relief pitching record !

Jesse Orosco is one of only 29 players in baseball history to have appeared in Major League games in four decades . He retired when he was 46 years old, one of the oldest players to still be playing in the modern age:

45 Year-Old Pitchers Club

45 Fred Johnson 1922 - 1939
45 Ted Lyons 1932 - 1946
45 Tim Wakefield 1992 - 2011

Twenty-four years on the mound, more than a thousand games pitched , and Jesse Orosco committed only four errors while fielding his position . Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith also had only four (but less games pitched / 1,035 & 1,022 respectively) and only one pitcher in baseball history has more than a thousand games pitched with less errors committed than Orosco (three). Who was it? [ Answer ]
