Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I was a guy that just liked to work hard. I think Bert ( Blyleven ) and Jim Kaat and Mudcat Grant , guys I roomed with in my career, they all know how hard I worked. I ran a lot. I think the pitchers have to run a lot like I did. When I went to Spring Training I felt like I had to make the team, although I had made the team before that. That made me work harder for when I was called on." - Jim Perry (Kelly Thesier / MLB.com, 01/25/2011, 'Twins great Perry gains entrance to club's Hall', Source )

Did you know that Camilo Pascual (1962-1963) and Jim Perry (1969-1970) are the only two Twins pitchers to record back-to-back 20-win seasons in Minnesota ? If we include previous pitchers from the franchise ( Washington Senators , 1901-1960) only two more aces get added to the list, hall of famer Walter Johnson (1910-1919 & 1924-1925) and Alvin Crowder (1932-1933).

Jim Perry went 24-12 in 1970 , leading all American League pitchers in games won ( Top 25 ), and took home the Cy Young Award - the first Minnesota Twins pitcher to receive the honor .

Gaylord Perry , Jim's brother, went 24-16 in 1972 , leading all American League pitchers in games won ( Top 25 ), and took home the Cy Young Award - the first Cleveland Indians pitcher to receive the honor .

The Perry brothers, through today, remain the only set of brothers in baseball history to each win a Cy Young Award .

The Perry brothers were once the winningest siblings in baseball history, having a combined 529 wins, well ahead of second place at that time, Christy Mathewson (373 wins) and Henry Mathewson (0 wins). In 1987, the Perry brothers were passed by the Niekro brothers ( Phil Niekro , 318 wins & Joe Niekro , 221 wins), who wrapped up their careers with a combined 539 wins.
