Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I didn't know there was anybody in there. In ever heard them. I hever heard a word they said when I walked up to the plate. Guy could shoot a thirty-thirty behind me, I'd never jup. When you concentrate enough on the ballgame, you never hear those people." - Dave Philley in This Side of Cooperstown: An Oral History of Major League Baseball in the 1950s (Larry Moffi, Dover Publications, 03/18/2010, Page 77)

On May 30, 1950 , Dave Philley had seven at-bats in a 14-2 Chicago White Sox victory over the St. Louis Browns . In game two of the doubleheader ( box score ), Philley had six at-bats in the 12-2 sweep, setting an American League record for most at-bats in a doubleheader .

Eleven years later (in 1961), Durable Dave set another at-bats record when he came to the plate an American League (AL) record seventy-two times during the same season as a pinch hitter.

The Baltimore Orioles used Philly so often partly because of his success at the plate that season, Dave hit .333 as a pinch hitter, recording a pinch hit record twenty-four hits ( Most Hits in an AL Season by a Pinch Hitter ) during those seventy two at-bats!

Did you know that if you take a close look at Dave Philley's 1958 batting logs , you'll see that as a pinch hitter, he went 1-for-1 on September 9 , 1-for-1 on September 11 , 1-for-1 on September 12 , 1-for-1 on September 13 , 1-for-1 on September 19 , 1-for-1 on September 20 , 1-for-1 on September 27 , and 1-for-1 on September 28 - a Major League record eight consecutive games with a pinch hit . In 1983, another pinch hitter matched the mark, do you know who it was? [ Answer ]
