Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The person holding the ball obviously has an advantage, and I do believe that good pitching will beat good hitting. But remember, that doesn't necessarily mean that good hitters won't hit good pitching." - Dan Plesac [Post Game Press Conference, MLB Network, 2014]

On September 28, 2003 , Dan Plesac took the mound for the final time in his Major League career. Called in from the bullpen during the top of the ninth inning, relieving Mike Williams , two outs on the scoreboard, Ryan Langerhans digging in at the plate, Plesac took the count full, but struck out Ryan swinging - the last Philadelphia Phillies pitcher in the history of Veterans Stadium. Plesac shared these memories:

"My last day in the big leagues was, without a doubt, one of the most memorable and enjoyable days of my life. I will remember the celebration for the rest of my life. To be on a field with Schmidt , Carlton , Luzinski , Bowa and Roberts was incredible. It was a day that, when the ceremony started, I knew my career was over. It was very emotional. Throughout my career, I tried to respect the game, my teammates, every place I played, the tradition and heritages. Everything hit me like a ton of bricks that day. It all came rushing back. I really enjoyed my time in Philadelphia . And I've said this on a lot of occasions, but I wish I would have played most of my career in Philly . I enjoyed everything about being a Phillie : the tradition, the city, the great players who wore the uniform. The fans are so passionate about their sports teams. As a player, you knew that when the game started, you had to be accountable for what you did."
