"Let me tell you, before I signed I didn't know they paid you for playing baseball. I played because I love it. It was incredible when they told me they were going to sign me and they were going to give me money." - Hanley Ramirez in The Miami Herald (Kevin Baxter, 03/02/2006)

baseball almanac fast facts

On September 13, 2008 , Hanley Ramirez hit his thirtieth home run of the season, joining just one former Florida Marlin , Preston Wilson , in the 30 / 30 Club ( 30 Home Runs and 30 Stolen Bases ). Ramirez was only the third 30-30 Club member in baseball history whose primary position, the year they hit 30 and stole 30, was shortstop, previously accomplished by Barry Larkin (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998) and Jimmy Rollins (2007).

What do Honus Wagner (1900, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911), Arky Vaughan (1935), Luke Appling (1936, 1943), Lou Boudreau (1944), Dick Groat (1960), Alex Rodriguez (1996), Nomar Garciaparra (1999, 2000), Hanley Ramirez (2009) and Jose Reyes (2011) have in common? They are the only shortstops in baseball history to win a batting title (Years Won).

Hanley Ramirez hit .342 the year he won his batting championship , easily capturing his second Silver Slugger Award at shortstop. A year earlier, El Nino only hit .301, but it was still high enough amongst National League shortstops to win his first Silver Slugger , which was also the first by a Marlins ' shortstop.

Did you know Hanley Ramirez (SS / 33 HRs), Jorge Cantu (3B / 29 HRs), Mike Jacobs (1B / 32 HRs) and Dan Uggla (2B / 32 HRs) were the first quartet of infielders on the same team ( 2008 Florida Marlins ) to each hit 25-or-more home runs during the same season?
