Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I stood out there in total isolation. Nothing bothered me. I would concentrate to the point where I would not even see the batter; I would only see the bat as he swung. When I was pitching well, I saw only the catcher." - Robin Roberts in Baseball between the lines: Baseball in the '40s and '50s as told by the men who played it (Donald Honig; Coward, McCann & Geoghegan; 1976) [ Robin Roberts Quotes ]

Did you know that when Robin Roberts joined the 20-wins club on October 1, 1950 , it was the last game of the regular season, it was his first 20-win season (first of six), and he was the Philadelphia ' first 20-game-winner since hall of famer Grover Alexander won thirty games for Philadelphia in 1917 ?

Did you know that Robin Roberts finished his career in Philadelphia with six twenty-win seasons, the most in team history (tied with Grover Alexander )? Next in line are Steve Carlton (5x), Charlie Ferguson (4x), Charlie Buffinton (3x) and Jack Taylor (3x).

Did you know that Robin Roberts, through today, still holds all-time Philadelphia Phillies ' pitching records for total batters faced (15,294), innings pitched (3,739.1), hits allowed (3,661), runs allowed (1,591), earned runs (1,437), games pitched (529), complete games (272), home runs surrendered (402) and games lost (199)? Did you know that Stan Musial recorded his 3,000 hit on May 13, 1958 , in Wrigley Field? Why did we mention that milestone here? Because on May 13, 1958 , in Connie Mack Stadium, Robin Roberts won his 191st game as a Phillie , one more than Grover Alexander , giving Robin the all-time wins mark in team history (since passed by Steve Carlton ).

The Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame was a collection of plaques (see image below), mounted on a brick wall in the Ashburn Alley section of Citizens Bank Park. From 1978 to 2003, the Philadelphia Phillies inducted one historical figure from their franchise and one notable person from the Philadelphia Athletics (A's) organization each year, with the exception of 1983, when the Phillies inducted their Centennial Team. Their Centennial Team commemorates the best players of the first 100 years in franchise history and Robin Roberts made the team which included: Richie Ashburn (OF), Bob Boone (C), Larry Bowa (SS), Steve Carlton (LHP), Del Ennis (OF), Dallas Green (MGR), Jim Konstanty (RHP), Garry Maddox (OF), Tug McGraw (LHP), Robin Roberts (RHP), Pete Rose (1B), Mike Schmidt (3B) and Manny Trillo (2B).
