Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"As a kid I threw the out-curve, and in-curve, and drop - a slider. My hero was the Yanks' Red Ruffing. He had this great windup, would pick his left leg up, and keep it high in the air. I said, 'I'm going to pitch like him.' So I did one day in Coney Island, picked up that leg, and fell right on my ass." - Singer Robert Merrill in What Baseball Means to Me: A Celebration of Our National Pastime (Curt Smith, Grand Central Publishing, 05/06/2002, Page 134)

Did you know that Red Ruffing suffered the loss of four toes on his left foot in a freak mining accident in Coalton, Illinois, as a youth? Ruffing subsequently converted from an outfielder to a pitcher.

Did you know that Red Ruffing is one of only three New York Yankee pitchers with four twenty-win seasons (1936, 1937, 1938, 1939)? Do you know who the other two are? A clue, it isn't Jack Chesbro , Ron Guidry , Mel Stottlemyre or Vic Raschi , they each had three twenty-win seasons with the Bronx Bombers . [Answer: Pitcher 1 / Pitcher 2 ]

On August 13, 1932 , Red Ruffing threw a complete game shutout and hit a 10th inning home run off Washington Senators pitcher Tommy Thomas to give the New York Yankees a 1-0 victory. Ruffing is one of only three pitchers in Major League history to win a game 1-0, hit a home run in the game, and strike out ten or more batters. The others are Early Wynn , who achieved the feat in 1957, and Yovani Gallardo , who did it in 2009.

After retiring, Ruffing worked as a roving instructor in the Cleveland Indians organization. When Al Simmons retired from his coaching position just before the 1951 season, bullpen coach Jake Flowers was moved to the third base coaching position, and Ruffing took over Flowers ' duties. From 1952-1961, Ruffing was a player personnel executive for the Indians . Ruffing returned to baseball serving as pitching coach for the New York Mets in 1962. The job also involved scouting duties, and Ruffing retired shortly after. He returned to baseball again in 1969, at the request of former teammate Don Heffner , who was managing the Denver Bears of the American Association, serving as pitching coach. At an Old Timers Day Ceremony on July 10, 2004, the New York Yankees dedicated a plaque in his memory in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.
