"Though John was a physician and operated a general practice in the downriver Detroit area for many years, he is perhaps best known for his shorter professional baseball career pitching for the Dodgers in Brooklyn at Ebbets Field and on the road. The first Canadian -born professional the U.S. Major League, he played 22 games in his first season alongside baseball legends including Jackie Robinson , Pee Wee Reese , Joe Black , Duke Snider , Preacher Roe and many others. Prior to his time in the Major Leagues, 'Doc', as he was always known by his teammates played in the minor leagues including the Fort Worth Cats where he Married Martha Jo under the lights of a night game, walking down an "aisle" of baseball bats held by his team, the pastor on home plate. Both he and Martha Jo also cherished their time spent in pre-revolutionary Havanna during spring training." - John Rutherford, D.O. Obituary (A.J. Desmond & Sons, Dr. John W.
