Wally Schang Stats

Wally Schang was born on Thursday, August 22, 1889, in South Wales, New York. Schang was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 9, 1913, with the Philadelphia Athletics. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Wally Schang baseball stats page.

" 20 - Wally Schang Was the regular catcher for six American League championship teams - the 1913 and 1914 Philadelphia A's , the 1918 Red Sox , and the 1921 , 1922 , and 1923 Yankees , was also a backup for the Philadelphia A's in 1930 . Switch hitter, walked a lot and ran unusually well for a catcher. Decent defensive catcher, not the equal of Ray Schalk , but good. In the 1921 World Series he gunned down nine runners stealing, effectively stopping the Giants running game." - Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, 20th Greatest Catcher in Baseball History , Page 380)

Did you know that Wally Schang had a younger brother , Bobby Schang , who was also a Major League catcher? Too easy? Did you know that Wally set the American League record for most assists in a game (8) by a catcher on May 12, 1920 ?
