Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Carl (Scheib) quit school and reported to the A's . Connie Mack placed him on salary as a batting practice pitcher. Surprising his teammates, Scheib displayed good control, a hard fastball, and a sharp curve. That summer he began making road trips with the team. In late August he pitched in the second game of an exhibition double-header against the League Island Marines. The righthander was impressive, working four innings, allowing no hits, and striking out seven." - Baseball Historian Jim Sargent (SABR Baseball Biography. Carl Scheib . Source )

Carl Alvin Scheib was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics A's (1947–1954), and closed out his career with the St. Louis Cardinals (1954).

Carl was a a self-described "farm boy" who grew up on a 10-acre plot near the tiny town of Gratz, Pennsylvania. He pitched for the local high school and shopped at Smeltz Grocery, where Mrs. Hannah Clark worked. She had witnessed Scheib's pitching and mentioned it to a traveling salesman named Al Grossman, who wrote a letter to Connie Mack . A similar disovery occurred in the past, where a salesman had told Clark Griffith about a prospect - his name was Walter Johnson , so Mack simply wrote back and invited them to travel to Philadelphia and tryout for the team.

Carl, and his dad, did exactly that! On June 23, 1942, during a rain-delay, threw some pitches in the bullpen for Mr. Mack. The skipper liked what he saw and told the youngster to return the following spring.

In June of '43, Carl was signed by the team - as a batting practice pitcher! Then, on Labor Day, that same year, Carl signed an $800 ($500 bonus / $300 for the remainder of season) contract and made his Major League debut, that same day!
