Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"(Vern) Stephens and ( Phil ) Rizzuto are similar in value, but very different in type - a speedster against a slugger, a defensive play against a hitter, a leadoff man against a cleanup hitter, a player who played in a pitcher's park against a player who plays in a hitter's park, a player who had a good break on playing time against a player who missed three of his best seasons. When you try to balance them against one another, you can't be sure that you have it right unless you can be sure that you're placing exactly the right weight on each element." - Baseball Historian Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, #22 Greatest Second Shortstop , Page 608)

The St. Louis Browns (1902-1953) are now known as the Baltimore Orioles (1954-today). While in St. Louis , the team won exactly one American League pennant, in 1944 . Vern Stephens was on that roster. He then played for the Boston Red Sox (1948-1952), the Chicago White Sox (1953), and the Baltimore Orioles after they relocated, making Junior the only Orioles player who also played for the pennant winning Browns !

Did you know that when Vern Stephens led the American League in home runs in 1945 , he became the first shortstop to ever lead the junior circuit in long balls ? Do you know what shortstop, fifty-six years after Junior, finally became a home run champion ? [ Answer ]

Did you know that only four shortstops, who played in a minimum of 125 games at short, in Major League history have driven in more than 140 RBI in a single season? The elite set includes: Alex Rodriguez (142 RBI in 2002), Ernie Banks , (143 RBI in 1959), Vern Stephens (144 RBI in 1950), Miguel Tejada (150 RBI in 2004) and Vern Stephens (159 RBI in 1949)!

Vern Stephens said, "Teamwork is the most important part of baseball. I have seen so many good teams lose games and pennants because they didn't have good teamwork. Every team has its individual stars, but if they do not play as a unit they will not win. Teamwork may be described in many ways. If there is a man on second an no one out, the batter tries to hit the ball towards right field and get the man to third base, so that he may score on a sacrifice fly, or some other way."
