"My best pitch has always been control. I lost some velocity, but at the same time, thank God, I didn't lose my control. That's 90% of pitching, keeping the hitter off balance." - Frank Tanana in Baseball Digest (October 1982, Page 6)

Did you know that Frank Tanana was the starting pitcher in the first regular season game ever played in both the Kingdome ( April 6, 1977 ) and "new" Comiskey Park ( April 18, 1991 ). Did you know that during both historic games, "TAN-talizing Tanana" (description used by Ernie Harwell) threw complete-games shutouts?

Did you know that when Frank Tanana struck out 180 batters in 1974, he set a new Angels franchise single season record for strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher, once held by Rudy May , who had 169 Ks in 1972? One year after Tanana set the record, he obliterated it, mowing down an American League leading 269 hitters, a team-specific record that remains intact through today!

Hank Aaron was the career leader for home runs (1974-2006) until Barry Bonds passed him in 2007. On June 14, 1976 , Tanana gave up a home run to Aaron and on July 17, 1993 , Tanana gave up a home run to Bonds , one of only two pitchers ( Rick Reuschel ) in this unique pairing of home runs allowed.

George Bamberger said Frank Tanana, "has excellent control, a great curve and a great changeup. In over 30 years of watching pitchers, he's the best I've seen at pitching inside, especially the way he runs the ball in on righties. If he didn't have arm problems, he might be the best pitcher in baseball, bar none." That quote was made by the former player turned manager in SPORT Magazine in May 1979, Tanana had already recorded four complete game two-hitters, four complete game three-hitters, and twenty-four shutouts.
