Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"There have been players who hold their bats precariously horizontal. There have been players who stood straight up. There have been players who unbuttoned their jerseys one button too many like a guest star on Miami Vice . There have been players with an inordinate amount of chaw in their mouths. There have been players who featured an all-business steely glare at the pitcher. There have even been players who appeared to be able to bench-press 400 points. There is only one player who put all that together and formed a company called Micky Tettleon. That company was about one thing: cool. Badass cool. You are toast cool. Check me out cool. I'm tougher than you cool." - Author Gar Ryness in Batting Stance Guy: A Love Letter to Baseball (Scribner Publishing, 05/11/2010, Page 65)

When Mickey Tettelton hit .258 in 1989, he had the highest batting average amongst American League catchers, earning him the first-of-three Silver Slugger Awards - the first backstop to receive the honor in a Baltimore Orioles uniform.

Did you know that Mickey Tettleton was ranked by baseball historian Bill James ( The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract , Free Press Publishers, 06/05/2003) as the thirty-seventh best catcher in baseball history? An excerpt from this must buy book:

37. Mickey Tettleton

Gene Tenace -type player, started with Oakland but never played very much there. He was a .240 hitter, and he wasn't much of a defensive catcher, but his .369 on-base percentage is 11th-best among the top 100 catchers (because he walked a hundred times a year) and his .449 slugging percentage is fifteenth best (because he could hit 30 homers a year).

Tettleton was a regular for three teams - Baltimore , 1989-1990, Detroit , 1991-1994, and Texas , 1995-1996. All three teams improved substantially when they put him in the lineup, and declined substantially when they replaced him .
