Sam Thompson Stats

Sam Thompson was born on Monday, March 5, 1860, in Danville, Indiana. Thompson was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 2, 1885, with the Detroit Wolverines. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Sam Thompson baseball stats page.

Sam Thompson's drives "were the direct cause of more hats being smashed, more backs that were thumped until they were black and blue by some wild-eyed fan sitting in the seat behind, more outbursts of frenzied shrieks and howls of glee, than those of any other player who ever wore a Detroit uniform..." - Staff Writer Maclean Kennedy in The Detroit Free Press (02/16,1913, "Sam Thompson Ranks as one of the Great Sluggers of Baseball History", Page 22)

In 1883 Francis Richter founded the Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887 Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914 Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:
