Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In these days when nine out of every ten batters simply takes a healthy swing, Johnny Tobin stands out as one of the few batters who mixes them up, keeps the pitcher uneasy. Tobin is fast, an excellent bunter and perhaps the best man in the American League dragging the ball down the first-base line. Nothing tends to upset a pitcher more than to have a player unexpectedly drag the ball and get away with it. The maneuver also tends to make the whole team wobble on defense. Tobin, however, doesn't confine his hitting to mere bunting or dragging the ball. He can pull a ball into right field with great force, and can poke a fast one on the outside into left field with uncanny deftness. Tobin is a batter of the old school, not unlike Willie Keeler in many respects. I am glad there are not more like him." - Hall of Famer Walter Johnson (The Sporting News, February 7, 1924)

Jack Tobin had 200+ hits in four consecutive seasons (1920, 1921, 1922, 1923), a hitting feat never matched by any player in Orioles / Browns (franchise) history. Only one player in franchise history ever had more 200-hit seasons, hall of famer George Sisler (1920, 1921, 1922, 1925, 1927). The next closest players in team history only have two 200-hit campaigns, they are; Baby Doll Jacobson (1920, 1921), Heinie Manush (1928, 1929), Beau Bell (1936, 1937), Cal Ripken, Jr. (1983, 1991), and Miguel Tejada (2004, 2006).

Did you know that Jack Tobin held the Baltimore Orioles franchise record for at-bats in a season for seventy-eight years? Tobin had 671 at-bats in 1921 , a team-specific record that stood until B.J. Surhoff had 673 at-bats in 1999 !

Walter Johnson once compared Jack Tobin to Willie Keeler (see quote at top of page), maybe it had something to do with the grand slam Tobin hit off The Big Train , one of only two he ever surrendered during his Hall of Fame career.
