Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"(Ozzie) Virgil should be for my country as important as ( Jackie ) Robinson [is] to the African-American. I'd place his legacy up there with that of those who established our republic. ... If I weren't playing baseball, I would most likely be working in my country. I thank God every day for opening the doors to the big leagues for me." - David Ortiz (ESPNdeportes, Enrique Rojas, 09/28/2006, '50 years ago, Ozzie Virgil made baseball history', Source )

Did you know that Ozzie Virgil was the first player from the Dominican Republic to appear in a regular season game? The native Dominican made his Major League debut on September 23, 1956 , and there were no announcements at the Polo Grounds , no fanfare, and no mention of it in the news (we reviewed more than 50 newspaper articles from that day in history / the best one appears below). Nonetheless, Virgil opened the doors for a country that has now become one of the strongest international influences on Major League Baseball.

"I can still remember my blood streaming furiously through my veins and adrenaline almost choking me on my first day in the majors.

"It was very hot, and we were playing the last game of a series of three against Philadelphia. I was placed on third base and went 0-for-4, but I felt as if I'd finished 4-for-4. I had been upgraded from the minors two or three days before, and I knew I would be the first of my small country to arrive in the best baseball league in the world. But what I never suspected was that in time, it would become something ordinary.

"I have always felt grateful and fortunate to have been chosen by God to open the doors of MLB for my countrymen, considering that hundreds with more talent than me hadn't been given the chance." - Ozzie Virgil

On September 28, 1957 , Ozzie Virgil pinch ran for Ray Jablonski in the bottom of the ninth inning. The New York Giants lost 1-0 to the Pittsburgh Pirates , played one more game at the Polo Grounds ( September 29, 1957 ), then moved west, where they became the modern day San Francisco Giants . Virgil was the last pinch runner in New York Giants history.

Ozzie was wearing #17 when he pinch ran, the last New York Giant to use that uniform number. A year later, Jim Finigan became the first San Francisco Giants player to use # #17 .

Ozzie was not able to wear #17 in 1958, because the San Francisco Giants traded him and Gail Harris to the Detroit Tigers for Jim Finigan and $25,000.

On April 27, 1957 , Ozzie Virgil hit his first career home run, off future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts , the first long ball hit by a Dominican-born player . After being traded to the Detroit Tigers , what happened? More firsts (see article above / Black Famous Baseball Firsts ).
