Tom, his nickname, was born in Scotland , and when he made his debut on April 15, 1984 , he became the seventh Scot in baseball history, joining Jim McCormick , Hugh Nicol , Mac MacArthur , Mike Hopkins , George Chalmers , and Bobby Thomson .
