Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"We were in Detroit one day. It seemed that Mickey Cochrane had just informed the erratic base-running Walker that the next time he got caught between bags it would cost him $50. Halfway through the game, Gee was footloose again. There was a peg to second and Walker knew he was a-goner. 'Drop it,' he yelled at the Sox infielder. 'Drop it and I'll give you $25 bucks!'" - Chicago White Sox Coach Luke Appling in The Chicago Daily News (John P. Carmichael, 01-02-1978)

Did you know that on Opening Day ( April 20, 1937 ), Gee Walker hit for the cycle , the only player in Major League history to accomplish that feat on Opening Day ? The Madman from Mississippi did it in reverse order, called an "unnatural cycle", starting with a home run, followed by triple, then a double and finally a single.

How did Gee Walker earn the nickname, "The Madman from Mississipi" (beyond that he was born in Mississippi )? On the basepaths, Walker finished in the top ten for stolen bases nine times, but he also once tried to steal a base during an intentional walk, he once (during the 1934 World Series ) was picked-off arguing with the players on the bench from the opposing team, and he was picked-off twice in the same inning! Besides being former Detroit Tigers , what do hall of famer Charlie Gehringer (1936), hall of famer Hank Greenberg (1934), hall of famer George Kell (1950) and Gee Walker (1936) have in common? They are the only four Tigers to each hit 55-or-more doubles in single season!
