Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I don't think you can expect anybody to be as productive as he's been in the short time he's been here. Certainly, we were hoping to catch lightning in a bottle." - Pirate Manager Lloyd McClendon on SportsLine.com (May 27, 2004, 'Ward Welcome to the Pirates')

On May 26, 2004 , Daryle Ward, roughly two weeks after being recalled from the minors, hit for the cycle - collecting a two-run double in the first inning, an RBI triple in the fourth, a three-run home run in the fifth, completing the cycle with a single in the ninth frame!

Why do we have a baseball card of Daryle's dad, Gary Ward pictured above? Because he ALSO hit for the cycle , on September 18, 1980 , making the duo the first father-son combination in Major League history to each complete a cycle !

Did you know that Daryle Ward was the first player to hit a home run into the Allegheny River on the fly? On July 6, 2002 , Ward CRUSHED a Kip Wells pitch over the right field bleachers and all the way into the river. Ward's grand slam - yes, the bases were loaded too, left the bat at 119 mph before splashing directly into the water, 452 feet away!
