Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The Ty Cobb and the Lou Brock of the foul-tip set is 6 feet 2 inches and carries 205 pounds rather unobtrusively. 'When you talk about John Wathan, you're not talking about catchers, you're talking about athletes,' says Gene Mauch , the manager of the California Angels , who has an eye and a phrase for people he admires." - New York Times Columnist George Vecsey in The Wilmington Morning Star (September 28, 1982, 'A catcher with the soul of a thief', Page 4D)

John Wathan spent his entire career playing for the Kansas City Royals . When he took over as manager of the Royals in 1987, he became their first former player to manage in Kansas City (since joined by Hal McRae and Bob Boone ).

Did you know when John Wathan stole his thirty-first base of the season on August 24, 1982 , in Arlington Stadium, he broke the Major League record for steals in a season by a catcher set by Hall of Fame catcher Ray Schalk , who had thirty steals in 1916?

When John Wathan's son, Dusty Wathan , stepped onto the field and played for the Kansas City Royals in 2002 , they were not the first father and son to each play for the Royals (but they were the first to each play catcher)! That honor went to Hal and Brian McRae .
