Ernie Whitt Stats

Ernie Whitt was born on Friday, June 13, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan. Whitt was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 12, 1976, with the Boston Red Sox. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Ernie Whitt baseball stats page.

" Ken Huckaby , Toronto's current catcher, says it best. When asked to describe Ernie Whitt, who's in town as an extra instructor during Spring Training, Huckaby provides some good perspective. 'Ernie's a great guy. I tease him all the time, because he's Mr. Blue Jay. If you talk about Blue Jays catchers, they all bring up Ernie Whitt," Huckaby said. "Ernie Whitt, Ernie Whitt, Ernie Whitt. I look at him and say, 'Were you that good?' The only time I saw him play was when I watched one of his old games. He looped to center field when somebody threw a no-hitter against them up in Toronto. I make fun of him for that, for not being able to get a hit.' Whitt caught more games than any other Blue Jay and is currently employed as Toronto's roving catching instructor." - By Spencer Fordin on MLB.com (02/24/2003, 'Where've you gone, Ernie Whitt?', Source )

Did you know that Ernie Whitt was a member of the 1977 Toronto Blue Jays , their inaugural roster, and when he left Toronto after the 1989 season, he was the last original Blue Jay ?

On September 14, 1987 , Ernie Whitt erupted for a career high three home runs in the same game leading the assault for the Toronto Blue Jays who set an all-time Major League record for most home runs in a game by a team in history (10). Whitt went deep in the second inning off Ken Dixon (bases were empty, no outs), in the fifth inning off Mike Griffin (bases were empty, no outs), and in the seventh inning off Tony Arnold (two men were on base, two outs).

Ernie Whitt was behind the plate in 1,159 games for the Toronto Blue Jays , a franchise record for games caught. Whitt was originally drafted in 1972 , by the Boston Red Sox, who had a pretty good catcher at the time named Carlton Fisk . Ernie pinch hit for him during his Major League debut on September 12, 1976 , and when Whitt was named to his first (and only) All-Star Game in 1985 , he actually entered the game as a defensive replacement for Carlton Fisk .
