"(Eddie) Yost had been with the Senators for 14 years when one day, while relaxing on sun-filled vacation, he opened the newspaper to discover that he had been traded to the Detroit Tigers Detroit , I was a pull hitter and it was only 340 feet going down the line. It was a good baseball town and I had one of my best years there — led the league in walks, in runs scored, was a lead-off hitter and my on-base percentage was well over .400.'" - By Michael Ferrigno / Townsman Correspondent in The Wellesley Townsman (01/29/2010, Wellesley's 'Walking Man,' Eddie Yost , Source )

Eddie Yost spent two seasons with the Detroit Tigers (1959-1960) before being selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 1961 American League expansion draft. Did you know that while Yost was with the Angels during their inaugural season he earned the distinction of being the first Angels player to appear in a Major League game, leading off in the team's first game, played at Baltimore on April 11, 1961 ? Too easy? Did you know "The Walking Man", in his last plate appearance (July 28, 1962) as a Major League player, received a base on balls?

How did Eddie Yost earn his nickname, The Walking Man? Because Yost led the American League in bases on balls six different seasons (1950, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1959 & 1960); more than Mickey Mantle (5 years), Harmon Killebrew (4 years) or Lou Gehrig (3 years). In fact, the only two AL players to lead the junior circuit more often than The Walking Man were Ted Williams (8 years) and Babe Ruth (11 years)! [ Year by Year Leaders for Bases on Balls ]

Between August 30, 1949, and May 11, 1955, Eddie Yost played in 829 straight games - the ninth longest consecutive game streak in baseball history (fourth most at the time, behind Gehrig , Everett Scott , and Joe Sewell )! [ Consecutive Games Played Records ]
