Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Zachary was introduced to professional baseball in an unusual way. While still a student at Guilford College in 1918, Zachary was about to travel to France to serve a Quaker-organized Red Cross unit during World War I. He was Philadelphia and, to pass the time, went over to see Athletics manager Connie Mack . Mack signed the southpaw. 'Reckon I bragged on myself a lot, and pitchers were scarce that year,' Zachary later reflected. Zachary, realizing that he was still in college and hoping to maintain his collegiate eligibility, pitched under an assumed name, Zack Walton. He won two games before he shipped overseas. 'Got knocked out of both, but it's in the book as two wins,' he said." - Baseball Historian Matthew Silverman in Baseball: The Biographical Encyclopedia (Total Sports Publishing, May 2000, Page 1,277)

Tom Zachary gave up one-hundred nineteen home runs during his career during his nineteen year career to seventy different hitters. The batters who did the most damage (going deep at least four times) were: Lou Gehrig (4), Mel Ott (4), Bob Meusel (4), Bing Miller (4), Ken Williams (4), Tris Speaker (5) and Babe Ruth (9).

Three of the nine home runs surrendered to Babe Ruth took place during the same season, 1927, the year The Bambino hit a record setting sixty. Numbers twenty-two ( June 16, 1927 ), thirty-six ( August 10, 1927 ) and sixty ( September 30, 1927 ) on " The Original 60 " chart were courtesy of Tom Zachary.

The two wins mentioned at the top of the page (see intro quote) pitched under an assumed name (Zack Walton) took place on July 11, 1918 , and July 20, 1918 . The box score from "Walton's" first win:
