World Series Gate Receipts

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive chart that illustrates year-by-year gate receipts for postseason play and World Series games. Included in the chart is final attendance numbers, gate receipts, total revenue pool and a winner & loser share received.

How does it work? The players' pool is formed from 50 percent of the gate receipts from the Wild Card Games; 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first three games of the Division Series; 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first four games of the League Championship Series; and 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first four games of the World Series.

The players' pool is then divided among the ten postseason clubs: the two World Series participants, the two League Championship Series runners-up, the four Division Series runners-up and the two runners-up in the Wild Card Games.

Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"When we played, World Series checks meant something. Now all they do is screw up your taxes." - Dodgers Pitcher Don Drysdale (World Series in 1956, 1959, 1963, 1965 & 1966)

baseball almanac fast facts

Through the 2017 Fall Classic , there have been one-hundred thirteen World Series contests played in Major League history with six-hundred sixty Series games played in front of 29,552,787 total baseball fans.

During the 1932 World Series slugger Babe Ruth said, "Hey, Mark , who are those cheapskates you're with." Mark Koenig was once a teammate (from 1925 through 1930) of Ruth's and his new club, the Chicago Cubs , voted him a half-share because he was not around for the entire season.

Did you know that the Pirates' owner Barney Dreyfuss added his share of the gate receipts to the players' share, so the losing team's players actually finished with a larger individual share than the winning team's in 1903? Did you know that during the World War II years, players in the World Series received a percentage of their shares in War bonds? Did you know that the Wildcard team does not receive a share unless they move-up to the next playoff round?
