Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"From the first time I met him (Chris Archer), I could tell he was raised the right way, that's a big part of it. I could tell he had the work ethic. The determination. He had that right mind-set to want to continue to learn and grow in the game of baseball. That's what he does -- he comes to the field every day to get his work in. He's a great teammate, he's a great person." - Teammate David Price (Bill Chastain, 11/08/2013, Archer humble in face of AL ROY Award candidacy , Source )

Did you know that when Chris Archer mowed down 252 batters in 2015 (12-13 record), he set a new Tampa Bay Rays franchise record for strikeouts in a season, breaking the pitching record once held by Scott Kazmir , who had 239 strikeouts in 2007 ?

Why did we mention his record? Because Archer was only the third pitcher in American League history to finish a season with more than 250 strikeouts, and a losing record. Those who came before him were Roger Clemens (257 strikeouts in 1996, 10-13 record), Nolan Ryan (260 strikeouts in 1978, 10-13 record / 327 strikeouts in 1976, 17-18 record), and Ed Walsh (258 strikeouts in 1910, 18-20 record)

On May 27, 2015 , Chris Archer had 12 strikeouts, and no walks. On June 2, 2015 , Chris Archer, in his next start, had 15 strikeouts, and no walks. The last pitcher to strike out 12-or-more batters in consecutive starts, without allowing a single walk, was Dwight Gooden - thirty-one years earlier!
