Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"...milk, no less was responsible for (Johnny) Logan's success in baseball. Ask a rival manager such as Phil Cavarretta of the Cubs what makes Johnny such an outstanding shortstop. And the answer is sure to come back: 'Look at his hands. Notice how strong and quick they are.' That's what caught the attention of Braves scout Dewey Griggs, who watched Johnny play one day in his native Endicott, N.Y. 'Where'd you get those hands?' Griggs asked the youngster. 'I've done quite a bit of milking', was the quick retort." - Author Tom Meany in Milwaukee's Miracle Braves (Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, 1956, Page 65)

Johnny Logan was born in the United States, but of Russian and Croatian descent. His father John Logan (Sr.), was from Tsaritsyn, now Volgograd, and his mother Helen Senko, was born in Croatia but also lived in the borderland of Poland. When The Left Arm of God ( Sandy Koufax ) made his Major League debut (as a relief pitcher on June 24, 1955 ), the batter he faced was Yatcha who promptly singled off him to right field.

Did you know that on August 26, 2005, the Milwaukee Brewers (Yatch was Milwaukee's shortstop for 14 consecutive years, the first five with the American Association Brewers and the next nine with the National League Braves) inducted Johnny Logan into their Milwaukee Braves Honor Roll in the concourse of Miller Park?

Did you know that Johnny Logan and Hank Aaron each led the National League in doubles in 1955? The duo were the first Milwaukee Braves to lead the National League in doubles and two players from the same team hadn't led the senior circuit in doubles since 1876, when Ross Barnes and Paul Hines each had 21 doubles while playing with the White Stockings .

Did you know that Johnny Logan won a ring during the 1957 World Series and a after leaving leaving the major leagues in 1963, Yatcha played one season in the Nippon Baseball League, with the 1964 Nankai Hawks, who won the championship - making Logan the first former Major League player to play on championship teams from the United States and Japan?

In the Milwaukee Sentinel, October 25, 1953, Dewey Griggs, the scout who signed Johnny Logan (as well as Hank Aaron , Wes Covington , Steve Kuczek & Bob Trowbridge ), wrote, "I knew Johnny was a natural the first time I laid eyes on him. Take a look at his hands. They're big and quick paws, ideal for a shortstop. But then Johnny excelled in any sport (he lettered in four sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track). I remember watching him perform at halfback one year during the New York all-state playoffs. That kid was a wonder at football."
