Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I often noticed at the beginning of the game (Con) Lucid never rubbed the ball in the dirt or mud, or resorted to any of the usual tricks to blacken the ball or rough it. When the new ball was tossed out to him at the beginning of the game Con would rub it in his glove with all his might. As he came from the box one day I discovered the secret. Half hidden in his glove was a piece of coarse, new sandpaper. 'What's that for Con?' I asked, innocently pointing to his glove. 'Oh,' said Lucid, 'that's a little invention of my own. You've no idea what a grip I can get on a new ball when it has been in juxtaposition with that little piece of sandpaper for a few times.'" - Bill Hallman in The Pittsburgh Press (01/01/1905, BILLY HALLMAN'S STORIES ABOUT CON LUCID , Page 19)

Con Lucid spent sixteen years in organized baseball and in his obituary ( The Corsicana Daily Sun , 06/26/1931, CON LUCID, WELL KNOWN SPORTSMAN DIED IN HOUSTON), they included this amazing (unverified) pitching feat, "In 1892 Lucid performed a feat that led to a berth in a major league club. Spokane's pitchers were all disabled as the club started a road trip. He took up the pitching duties, hurled 30 consecutive games on 30 consecutive days and won all of them."
